For many young Rwandans with disabilities, moving from university to the world of work is still a big challenge. Even after completing their studies, they often face barriers that stop them from finding good jobs. This issue was at the heart of a recent national conference on disability inclusion, where leaders, educators, and partners discussed how to build stronger bridges from education to employment.
The conference was organized under the Advancing Inclusion for Students with Disabilities in Higher Education in Rwanda (ANSWER) Project. The project works to improve access, learning conditions, and policies for students with disabilities. Through training, modern inclusion practices, and networking, ANSWER is helping to prepare students for success in the labour market.
Speaking at the conference, Prof. Florien Nsanganwimana, Principal of College if Education, reminded participants that inclusion is more than technology.
“The most powerful tool for inclusion is not a device ; it is the decision to truly see another person,” he said, underlining the importance of empathy alongside innovation.
Discussions at the conference pointed out key barriers : skills gaps, inaccessible career services, limited internships, employer stereotypes, and workplaces without assistive technologies. At the same time, solutions were shared, such as making workplaces more accessible, promoting inclusive hiring, and giving incentives to companies that support graduates with disabilities.
The main message was clear : disability inclusion is not charity, but an investment in human capital. With the right support, graduates with disabilities can make a strong contribution to Rwanda’s development.
The conference ended with a promise to strengthen cooperation between universities, employers, and policymakers, working together to create an inclusive pathway from education to work, so that no graduate is left behind.
